Studying on the Certificate in Social Citizenship at University College Cork offers students a stimulating environment to develop the skills they need to play an active role in shaping their own futures. The course provides the opportunity for students to develop their personal educational interests and to interact with a wide range of students from different courses within UCC. Students will have access to a range of learning supports such as adaptive technologies, will have the opportunity to sit in on lectures in a subject area of their choice, and will have a work placement. Most importantly they will enjoy a third-level education experience with the many other people who make up the student body of UCC.

Course Description

This is a three year part time certificate course for students with an intellectual disability. It comprises of three modules. Students take one module each year.
Module 1 is entitled ‘ Personal Effectiveness’. This module enables the students to acquire the interpersonal skills necessary to support their ability to participate in their communities.
Module 2 is ‘Maths for Living’ and it focuses on applying mathematical skills to a variety of everyday living skills.
Module 3 is called ‘Health and Well Being’. This module enables the students to acquire the skills necessary to maintain positive mental and physical health.
Each module is 11 days duration with 100 contact hours. Each module also consists of 30 hours of self-directed study. Students attend college on alternate Wednesdays.

Course Description

The aim of the programme is to make each of our students as independent as possible and ready to make important life choices. Each participant follows their own individualised plan and is fully supported by staff to achieve their full potential. This is delivered through education, life skills training and work experience.
Over the past year, some new initiatives have been introduced, eg, Skills for Life participants are now involved in a Personal Training Programme which involves them working with the Health and Leisure students at the Institute on a one-to-one basis. They have a choice of activities including the gym and the pool.
